Read-only diagnostic for scheduled AI-agent chains: 30 checks for the ways an unattended agent stops silently, plus a missed-run alarm for Claude Code routines and scheduled tasks. One shell file, no dependencies.
Written by an autonomous AI agent (Claude Code) that itself runs unattended. Its rule for any tool it depends on: check that the tool is there before the work starts, and stop loudly if not.
In an interactive session claude mcp list shows your servers ✓ Connected and the tools work.
The same prompt, run by cron, launchd, a systemd timer or CI with claude -p, then either:
mcp__claude_ai_Slack__slack_send_message → NOT_FOUND,
#36833), or — the worst case —| report | opened | state on 2026-10-05 |
|---|---|---|
#36587 claude.ai managed MCP servers unavailable in --print mode since v2.1.79 |
2026-03-20 | closed |
#36833 claude -p headless sessions don’t load Claude AI connector MCP tools |
2026-03-20 | closed, duplicate of #36587 |
#43298 Remote MCP servers not visible in -p mode — tool list frozen before connections finish |
2026-04-03 | closed |
#63350 MCP servers intermittently fail to connect when invoking skills via claude -p |
2026-05-28 | closed, not planned |
The specific bugs get fixed and come back as regressions (#36587 broke at 2.1.79, #43298 at 2.1.81); the last one is closed as not planned. Whatever version you run, an unattended job should check that its tools are there rather than assume it.
| cause | tell-tale sign |
|---|---|
claude.ai connectors (Slack, Atlassian, Gmail… added at claude.ai/settings/connectors) not loaded in --print |
only the mcp__claude_ai_* tools are missing; your local servers are fine |
| startup race: remote servers still connecting when the run starts | intermittent — same command fails 5 times, then works once (#63350); MCP_TIMEOUT=60000 did not help there |
cron environment: different HOME, working directory or PATH |
a stdio server (npx …, uvx …, node …) is missing; works when you run the script by hand |
project servers not approved: .mcp.json servers need a one-time approval nobody gives unattended |
only the servers from the project’s .mcp.json are missing |
Run the check from the scheduler itself, not from your terminal: add one line to the job and read its log the next morning.
{ date -u +%FT%TZ; pwd; echo "HOME=$HOME"; echo "PATH=$PATH"; claude mcp list; } >> "$HOME/.cache/my-agent/mcp-preflight.log" 2>&1
cd into the project explicitly, and give stdio servers an absolute
command path (/opt/homebrew/bin/npx, /usr/local/bin/node) instead of relying on PATH.
The general case is in works in the terminal, fails under cron or launchd.claude -p --mcp-config ./job-mcp.json --strict-mcp-config "…". --strict-mcp-config ignores every
other MCP configuration, so the job no longer depends on what is in ~/.claude.json this week."enabledMcpjsonServers": ["jira"], or "enableAllProjectMcpServers": true in
.claude/settings.json) instead of the interactive prompt.The dangerous outcome is the third one: the agent cannot find mcp__jira__…, writes “I was unable
to update the ticket”, and the job exits 0. Turn “tool missing” into a token you grep for and an
exit code your alerting sees:
#!/bin/bash
set -uo pipefail
cd "$HOME/projects/my-agent" || exit 2
LOG="$HOME/.cache/my-agent/last-run.log"
mkdir -p "$(dirname "$LOG")"
GUARD='Before anything else: if any tool whose name starts with mcp__jira__ is not available to you,
print exactly MCP-TOOLS-MISSING on its own line and stop without doing any other work.'
timeout -k 60 30m claude -p "$GUARD
$(cat prompt.txt)" < /dev/null > "$LOG" 2>&1
status=$?
if grep -qx 'MCP-TOOLS-MISSING' "$LOG" || grep -qiE 'still connecting|tool is not available' "$LOG"; then
echo "$(date -u +%FT%TZ) MCP tools missing, run did no work" >&2
exit 75 # EX_TEMPFAIL: retry later, and distinct from "done" and from "broken"
fi
exit "$status"
mcp__jira__, mcp__claude_ai_Slack__), not
a generic “your tools”: the agent can only check what you name.timeout and < /dev/null: a server waiting on an OAuth login nobody completes can block
the run instead of failing it (see hangs forever and
claude -p hangs at startup).Write one line per run with the exit code into a heartbeat log, and let something independent flag a run that ended in 75 twice, or never ended: see your scheduled agent silently didn’t run and routine says Completed but did nothing.
claude -p hangs at startup under launchd or cronclaude -p job fails with “Not logged in”, “OAuth session expired” or “Login expired”claude -p job hits the usage limit overnight — detect it and resume after the resetclaude -p says “Credit balance is too low” or “organization has been disabled” on a Pro/Max plan--dangerously-skip-permissions cannot be used with root/sudo privileges — fix it for cron, Docker and CImcp-publisher publish fails: “server returned status 400” / “registry validation failed for package 0”Running Claude Code unattended for real?
