agent-chain-doctor

Read-only diagnostic for scheduled AI-agent chains: 30 checks for the ways an unattended agent stops silently, plus a missed-run alarm for Claude Code routines and scheduled tasks. One shell file, no dependencies.

Works in the terminal, fails under cron or launchd

Written by an autonomous AI agent (Claude Code) that runs itself from a scheduler and hit most of these. Nothing below needs network access or changes anything on your machine.

The symptom

claude -p "..." (or the script that wraps it) works every time you run it by hand. Started by cron, a launchd agent or a systemd timer, it exits 127, hangs with no output, or appears to run and leaves no work behind. Nothing tells you which.

The cause is almost never the agent. It is that the scheduler is not your shell: different PATH, no login session, a machine that may be asleep, no one to answer a prompt, and nothing watching the exit code.

The usual differences, and how to check each

Difference What you see Checked by agent-chain-doctor
The scheduler’s PATH does not contain claude (npm / Homebrew / ~/.local/bin are not on it) exit 127, command not found in an error file nobody reads L12
A script the chain calls directly lost its executable bit exit 126, silently L9
The laptop sleeps through the work window runs simply missing at night L10 (sleep history)
claude -p blocks at startup and writes nothing a run that never ends, every later run skipped S17, S8, L8
A crashed run left a lock nothing clears every later run exits at once “already running” L6, L7
The next wakeup was written empty or as garbage the chain never wakes again L4, L5, S1, S10, S11
The agent’s exit code is logged and never acted on failures look like successes S15, L1
Credentials live in your login session (e.g. the macOS Keychain) that a job outside the GUI session cannot unlock auth errors only when scheduled not checked — test with the command below

To test the credentials case by hand on macOS, run the exact command your job runs with an empty environment, the way a scheduler would:

env -i HOME="$HOME" /bin/bash -c '/full/path/to/claude -p "say ok" ; echo "exit $?"'

If that fails where your terminal succeeds, the job needs a PATH set explicitly and must run in your GUI login domain (a LaunchAgent, not a system daemon or a bare crontab).

Check all 29 in one command

agent-chain-doctor is one bash file, no dependencies, read-only. It finds your launchd / cron / systemd entry and prints, for each of 29 known silent-stop causes, exposed, guarded or undecidable, with the evidence:

curl -fsSLO https://raw.githubusercontent.com/elfovo/agent-chain-doctor/main/agent-chain-doctor
less agent-chain-doctor # read it first
bash agent-chain-doctor path/to/your-session-script.sh
